School Closure Instructions for Learning

Dear Valley High School Parents and Students,

The teachers at VHS are ready to provide instruction to students in an on-line electronic format. Please make sure that your student(s) has their Chromebook and charger, calculators, notebooks, and any textbooks or reading books that they use in their classes beginning tomorrow. They may come to the school tomorrow (Tuesday, March 17) between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm to pick up any of the needed items if they do not already have them.

All of the students’ classes will run through the CANVAS LMS platform.  I have included a tutorial video showing how students access canvas and how parents can be added as observers to their student’s courses.  All of the students have accessed CANVAS before but they might need a refresher and it is helpful for a parent to be an observer so that they can see what assignments are due when.   Let us know if you need any help with this.

It will be the student's responsibility to access course information and complete assignments to earn credit for the course. If they need help they will need to contact teachers to make an appointment. Each teacher will have office hours during which they will be available to meet with students either through video, chat or in person.  I have included an attachment with those office hours for each teacher.

Here are a few suggestions that will help your students be successful with our online courses.
1 - Students will be better off if they keep to a daily routine for required coursework including a designated place to complete their school work and a designated time to work on each class.  I have included our school bell schedule and the A/B calendar in case that might help with that scheduling.
2 - We ask that parents monitor their child's recreational technology use as much as possible during learning hours as those distractions can prove detrimental to their grades.
3 - Please check each day to make sure students have completed assignments for the day and are staying on track in their classes.

We will be limiting access to the school building as our custodial staff works to clean and sanitize our buildings; however our library will remain open for the time being so that students can check out books and materials as needed.   Students will be able to meet with teachers in small groups until otherwise directed.  Remember that Wednesday – Friday this week is Spring Break.  Please contact your student's teachers for assistance and questions.

The weight rooms and gyms will be closed until further notice.

Again, we appreciate the constant support VHS parents and guardians provide their students and want to thank you in advance for your help in facilitating this new process.  We hope this new transition will be smooth and we will do our best to work out any issues quickly.

If you have any concerns or question regarding student Chromebooks or online curriculum, please contact your child's teacher or school administration.

Thanks again for all your help with this new process. Please view the links below as they will answer many questions.

Students should visit canvas on a daily basis during the school closure to stay caught up in all classes.
